ADELEENA LIM

Yoga Instructor @ANE

MONDAY CLASS 8.15 pm – 9.15 pm

Adeleena stepped into her first yoga class in 2000, but it wasn't until 2012 that she started truly exploring the different forms of yoga. Her background in the mental health industry straight out of university (BA in Psychology) sparked her interest in Somatic and Movement Therapy upon realising the limitations of talk therapy. Many years in search of answers coupled with an innate interest in self-inquiry, healing and fitness eventually led her to a deeper study and practice of yoga and meditation.

Adeleena established a personal practice of Ashtanga in 2013 and has maintained a dedicated practice ever since. She is a certified RYT 200-hour Ashtanga Vinyasa instructor with an additional 50 hours in Hatha. Her deep interest and enthusiasm to learn all facets of yoga has also led her to practise different styles including Yin, Restorative, Tripsichore and Aerial.

Adeleena frequently attends workshops to study directly and train with renowned teachers like Delamay Devi, Swami Vivekananda, David Swenson and Manju Jois, and credits Lorraine Taylor as her mentor and inspiration. Most recently, she completed myofascial release (MFR) bodywork, a soft tissue therapy that relaxes tight muscles and stimulates stretch reflex as well as improves blood and lymphatic circulation. She also makes annual trips to Mysore, India (the birthplace of Ashtanga Yoga) to deepen her practice with Ajay Kumar.

Adeleena is dedicated to sharing her passions and the practice of yoga, meditation, pranayama and self-healing as tools to wellness, positive transformation and joy attainable by all. Her classes provide a safe space to explore postures (asana) and movements that facilitate toning, detoxification, neuromuscular strengthening and increase in flexibility while harmonising the seven chakras through in-depth instructions on posture alignment and awareness of the breath in a beautiful flow sequence accessible to all levels.

Ashtanga Vinyasa

Ashtanga Vinyasayoga is a system of yoga recorded by the sage Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta, an ancient manuscript imparted to Sri T Krishnamacharya in the early 1900s, later passed down to and popularised by Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009), which involves synchronising the breath with a progressive series of postures–a process that increases the quality of blood and its efficient flow throughout the body, producing intense internal heat and sweat to facilitate the purification and efficiency of the muscles, internal and external organs.

The Vinyasa system of Ashtanga Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga Chikitsa (Yoga Therapy) addresses the Ashtanga practice from a therapeutic perspective while celebrating the sheer joy and beauty of the body in movement; a steady and enjoyable practice with minimal pain and risk of injury. In addition to developing strong foundations of postural alignment, strengthening of the neuromuscular system and joint stability, Ashtanga Yoga is the only form of yoga proven in modern day scientific studies to have cardiovascular benefits. In today’s world of extreme stresses, pollution and unnatural environments, this age-old discipline provides an effective means to improve circulation, shape a light, strong body and calm the mind to restore and maintain a healthy, balanced existence.

APRIL KUAN

Yoga Instructor

THURSDAY CLASS 8pm – 9pm

April started her yoga journey in 2009, establishing a regular practice in Ashtanga and Hatha that helped her find balance from a stressful publishing career. Her practice and study of yoga have since evolved through the years, from what was once a purely physical practice to one that has embraced meditation and mindfulness. Falling in love with yoga as she noticed the changes in her mental and physical wellbeing, she felt a desire to delve more deeply into the study of yoga through teacher training.

She is now a certified RYT 200-hour Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga instructor from Dharamsala, India (a place she was spiritually drawn to), and continues to grow her practice as an ever-evolving student of yoga while regularly incorporating pranayama, meditation and chanting.

April has adopted a practical and open-minded approach to yoga practice and philosophy, a methodology acquired from her teacher and mentor Yogi Sivadas. She is a true advocate of yoga for everybody and every kind of body, and believes that every posture can be modified to suit any age and fitness level. April’s teaching style exemplifies yoga as a moving meditation, one that is practised with grace, and a real awareness of the mind and body connection. Her classes are a strong and steady flow with lots of heart and shoulder openers that improve posture and promote good feelings, and hip stretches that release stress and stifled emotions. Also a certified Sound Healer, she adds her own unique touch at the end of each class by employing the sound and vibrations from a Tibetan singing bowl to help balance the seven chakras during the final relaxation pose of savasana.

Through her years of practice, April knows only too well about injuries in yoga (having also sustained them herself), and her fastidiousness sees her lead classes with a focus on posture and alignment to ensure a solid foundation for a safe practice. Building on this base, she is currently doing a work-study programme in Iyengar Yoga at BKS Iyengar Yogashala in Kuala Lumpur. April also offers separate one-on-one-Sound Healing sessions that help harmonise the mind and body’s inner functions, and balance the homeostasis for better mental and physical health.
